I had a brief conversation with a friend yesterday about really weird trends we’ve both noticed within [online] communities wherever writing or art is concerned, the main one being someone’s disposition VS the way they’re received by others. It’s something that I’ve noticed countless times and in various different places.
Generally, I’ll see people who are really uncouth, unfriendly or just plain rude to their fanbase (if you can…call it that?), yet despite their poor attitude, said following continues to steadily grow over time and they’re continued to be praised and adored.
On the opposite side of that spectrum, you have people that come off as pretty decent people who are polite and take the time to try to get to know the people that are fans of their work, yet their fanbase seems absolutely terrified of them, or, at the very least, really intimidating to approach them.
This just seems so totally and completely backwards to me. I would expect people to be scared and intimidated of the ones who are blatantly unpleasant than the people who make themselves accessible, not the opposite.
Is it because people have a mindset of “oh, if I can befriend this person, then I’ll be popular like they seem to be too!!” or something? Because quite honestly, I would rather be friends with someone who was chill and treated me with mutual respect than someone who was going to constantly and deliberately be an asshole to me 24/7. Maybe that’s just me.
And don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that this is 100% true every single time— there are absolutely exceptions to this! I’m just so curious as to why this seems to happen.
